Whether it’s a laid-back dinner for a few friends or an over-the-top Halloween party (my favorite holiday!), I love finding beautiful and creative ways to entertain in style. As usual, I used a lot of these color changing LED spot lights, which add general ambiance to the yard. I made the skeleton driver look a little spookier by adding a purple uplight that makes him much easier to see in the dark. Hanging a black light over the top of it makes the white letters glow at night. I also found old medical books at an antique store that I used to decorate the mantel, along with some other creepy looking decor.
I thought of an operating room, morgue, even a zombie baby nursery, but I'm having trouble finding where I could find props and such at lower (non-profit) prices. I wanted to transform the house without spending a fortune, and to me, a big focal wall is always a good idea. However, the pictures we have in there all year happen to be creepy medical images! So for this party we didn’t have to do anything with them at all! In fact, the pictures in the frames on our living room wall come from the medical history museum in Berlin; the Medizinhistorisches Museum. Pictures of old medical instruments, pages from old medical texts, etc.
So the ones in these pics are white foam board, but for the haunted asylum party I made them with black foam board, and I made fake rusty metal hinges to stick on the sides. The little details really enhance everything. My research told me that for the old-timey mausoleum drawers, like where family members would be interred permanently, you usually have a drawer that slides straight out, so no hinges.

Terrific Halloween bash—the kind that haunts your guests for years to come… Well, that takes a little more effort and thoughtfulness. Have you checked with the local Hospitals? Don't worry, it's not too scary, though sometimes just a little is even too much for some kids. Dress a skeleton in ragged clothing and boots, coat mop heads in monster mud and drape allover. I only put a costume mask in a jar then added water! Plan on putting a glow stick or submersible LED light in the jar for effect.
Guess I need to have more imagination and start visiting flea markets. Bet you can find some interesting things to use for props like this. Play a tape of whimpering, crying, or crazy babble. Each team was given a list with over 100 crazy things to do.

I simply took normal things that you would find in a medical office and made them a little bit spooky. I made a “take a number” sign from cardboard. I added dead houseplants and creepy looking, old magazines. I added homemade prescription labels to glassine bags and guests were encouraged to fill their bags with things like beetle larvae and human blood capsules to create their own concoction. It was a hit and worked great with the hospital themed party.
I love these battery operated taper candles. The courtyard is the main stage with fantastic shows. Go to the moat, and you will be threatened by monsters, werewolves, witches and zombies. For the very brave, the tower of terror introduces you to the dark side of the Middle Ages.
Inside, all the party people lay brutally murdered, with the sultan’s brother having been buried alive in the backyard. Sarah was said to have slept in a different room each night and used secret passageways throughout the mansion in an effort to throw off the spirits. So I wanted to create something like that for my haunted hotel, too. Bars on windows — I made fake bars by rolling up craft paper into bar shapes and spray painting them black, and then taped them directly to the windows. This looked great from both inside and outside the apartment; from the street outside, the windows glowed bright red and had these distinct black lines where the bars were. Baby parts in jars — Our kitchen cabinets were propped open and full of old jars stuffed with baby doll heads, snakes and spiders, etc, all with spooky yellow backlighting.
For more than six decades, the house was uninhabited, used only as a storage space by its new owners. Many rooms sat untouched from the way they were when the Perelsons lived there—dust-covered Christmas tree, ‘50s TV set, wrapped gifts, and all. Anyway, for the haunted asylum party, we covered the interior of that hallway area with red plastic table cloths, using making tape to stick ’em up. I then hung a couple dozen white paper maché animal masks on the walls and door; more about those masks here. If you know me, then you know I am big on creating experiences for my guests. This Halloween party was no different. I love to bring in an element of competition to get everyone involved and having fun.
